This year, a total Solar Eclipse will take place on July 22, 2009. It will be longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century. This solar eclipse is the longest total solar eclipse that will occur in the twenty-first century, and will not be surpassed in duration until June 13, 2132. Solar Eclipse has a great astrological siginificance as it gives advance information about living beings, things to befall on the earth, its inhabitants, rulers, things that grow on the earth, their availability and prices. The occurance of eclipse forewarn about the impeding earthquakes, famine, drought, war and various other things. In solar eclipse, the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun. When this happens, part of the Sun's light is blocked. The sky slowly gets dark as the Moon moves in front of the Sun. When the Moon and the Sun are in perfect line, it is called a total solar eclipse. At this time, Moon will directly be in the line of sight between the Earth and the Sun.

According to Lahari, total Solar Eclipse on July 22, 2009 will be visible in the region covering India, Southern and Eastern Asia, Japan, Northern Indonesia, the Philippines, Western and Central Pacific Ocean. Totality will be visible in many large cities, including Surat, Vadodara, Bhopal, Varanasi, Patna, Dinajpur, Chengdu, Nanchong, Chongqing, Yichang, Jingzhou, Wuhan, Huanggang, Hefei, Hangzhou, Wuxi, Huzhou, Suzhou, Jiaxing, Ningbo and Shanghai, as well as over the Three Gorges Dam. According to some experts, Taregana in Bihar is the "best" place to view the event. This eclipse takes place in the constellation of Pushyami star and the adverse impact will be on the individuals born with the stars of Punarvasu, Pushyami, Aslesha, Anuradha and Uttarabhadra. According to rasi, natives belonging to Vrushaba, Kanya, Tula and Kumba Rasi will get excellent benefits on account of this eclipse while natives belonging to rasis of Mesha, Mithuna, Simha, Vruschika, Dhannus, Makara and Meena rasi may witness some problems and hurdles. They are advised to perform remedial measures as per the customs followed in order to mitigate adverse effects. According to Hindu customs, the natives have to perform Rudrabhishekam to Lord Shiva after the completion of Solar eclipse. It is also advised to donate dress material, cash and perform Annadanam to the needy. Those who cannot perform all these can also make abishekam to Lord Shiva. Hindus take certain preventive measures. People avoid taking food well before the commencement of the eclipse and take bath after the eclipse ends and eat only thereafter. Pregnant women are advised to remain inside a room, where the Sun rays do not pass through, so that the child in the womb does not get affected by the radiation that is said to cause damage to the child in the womb.

Acharya Varahamihira in his book 'Brihat Samhita' mentioned about the effects of Solar eclips when it occurs in Karkataka Rasi. It is said that the effects of the solar eclipse in Karkataka Rasi will cause epidemics, diseases, drying up of water bodies like rivers, canals etc., People living in the mountains will be afflicted. As the present eclipse occurs in Dakshinayana, trading community and working class are likely to be adversly affected. As this eclipse involves Ketu, the effects are likely to be adverse. During this eclipse, Budha joins the Sun which becomes eclipsed. So, persons belonging to the ruling community, defence personnel, youngsters and the educated persons would suffer. Since, the eclipse falls in movable sign, the effect will be brief and temporary. This eclipse will have adverse effect only on those countries and individuals in which Cancer happens to be adversly affected in 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th houses, or in 10th or 12th house from their lagnas.

Due to the solar eclipse, adverse effects likely to happen are floods, loss of food grains, natives dealing with the business related to milk, curd, fisheries and hotels. Those natives in love affairs may also get adverse results. Divorce cases will increase. In India, especially Punjab and Kashmir will be severly effected.
