The month of Pushya / Pausha / Tai / Poush begins from December 28, 2008 and ends on January 26,2009.
Out of 24 Ekadasis in a year, Vaikunta Ekadasi is considered to be the most auspicious one. Lord Maha Vishnu gives darshan to the devotees on Uttara (North side) Dwaram on this most auspicious day. That is the reason why this day is called as Vaikunta Ekadasi. On this auspicious day the doors of Heaven opens. On this day devotees observe fasting and recite Vishnu sahasranamavali through out the day. It is observed with much gaiety in the temples at Tirumala, Bhadradi and Sri Rangam.
On this day, marriageable aged girls perform Savitri Gowri Devi nomu. They offer prayers to Gowri Devi and those who visit to see this nomu will be given fruits and Tambulam.
During three day Sankranti festival, Bhogi is observed on the first day, on second day, Sankranti and the third day is Kanuma. On the Bhogi day, before the Sun rise, people light fire and offer prayers. On this day, Sri Goda Devi Kalyanam will be performed in Vaishavalayams.
From this day, the Uttarayanam begins. On this day people have to take head bath before sun rise. It is on this day, people offer prayers to Lord Suryabhagavan with cow milk. Natives who are suffering from chronic diseases will ward off. On this day, natives have to offer abishekam to Lord Shiva with cow ghee that results more financial strength.
People offer special prayers to Sankranti Lakshmi to bless them. Newly married couples will come to in laws house where they are being honored with new dress is the tradition in South India.
On this day, natives have to offer tailabhishekam to Lord Shani. By offering prayers to Lord Shani, He will bless the natives with all sorts of good things. Natives who are under the grip of Sade Sani ie., Karkataka Rasi, Simha Rasi, Kanya Rasi and those who are under Asthama Sani natives of Makara Rasi, ardhastama Sani natives of Vrushaba Rasi have invariably offer prayers to please Lord Shani Bhagavan.
Lunar eclipse falls on this day between 2.44pm to 4.02pm. Natives of Makara Rasi, Sravanam, Hasta, Rohini natives have to offer remedial measures to nullify the negative effects of the eclipse. On the next day, natives have to offer Sarpa Sookta sahita Mahanyasapoorvaka Ekadasa Rudrabhishekam that gives an excellent benefit to the natives.
