Gauri Tritiya is an auspicious day dedicated to Goddess Parvathi and is mainly observed in Maharastra. It falls on the third day of the waxing phase of Moon in Chaitra masam. According to legends, it is believed that Goddess Parvathi returns to the home of her parents on this day. Another legend cites that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi got married on that day. Goddess Gauri is one of the manifestations of Goddess Parvathi.
After the conclusion of her ferocious form of Goddess Kali, Devi is observed a severe penance to get rid of her black complexion. She became Goddess Gowri, the very pretty young woman with a golden complexion. As unmarried girl, she performed severe penance to marry Lord Shiva.
The observance is also known as Soubhagya Gauri Vrata. On this day, women worship the Mother Goddess for their marital bliss. The prayers are for the well-being of the family. Unmarried women pray for good husbands.
It must be noted here that Kashmiri pandits observe a Gauri Tritiya during the Sukla Paksha of lunar month of Magha Masam.
